At Not Today Defense and Firearms Training, we make it our mission to keep California CCW (Concealed Carry Weapon) permit holders informed and prepared. A new state law went into effect on January 1, 2026, introducing a major change that every permit holder needs to understand.
What Changed Under AB 1078
Through Assembly Bill 1078, California amended Penal Code § 26225(e), removing the renewal grace period that previously allowed CCW holders to apply for renewal shortly after expiration.
In short, once your CCW license expires, that’s it; there’s no longer any window to renew.
If your permit lapses, you will need to apply as a new applicant, which means starting over from scratch. That typically includes:
- Completing full initial CCW training hours and a live-fire qualification
- Submitting to fingerprinting (which may soon be required for renewals as well)
- Managing longer processing times and higher overall costs
What This Means for CCW Holders
This change makes it more important than ever to stay on top of your expiration date. Most counties and issuing authorities allow license renewal 90–120 days before your CCW expires, and we strongly recommend taking advantage of that early window.
A proactive approach ensures you stay compliant, avoid delays, and maintain your legal protection without interruption.
